Growing Your Development Team — Part Two

In the first part of this series, I focused on growing your team by bodies and headcount.

But sometimes that is not an option, you simply can’t go out and get more bodies — you don’t have the money, you don’t want to disrupt the team, you can’t take on the additional workload right now — pick your reason, it’s valid and sometimes growing by numbers is not an option.

But you can still grow your team.

Grow By Skill

When we talk about levelling up, we are always talking about skills. Skills are what makes us better, force us to grow and learn more. Your job as the team leader is to figure out what those skills are that will help your team grow.

Where are the gaps that need to be filled?

Where are you spending too much time with little value?

What’s coming down the pipe?

These are questions that you always need to be asking yourself because they matter to your team growth in what they can achieve, together. However, as the leader, you also need to be cognizant of what each member of your team wants to achieve and how they want to scale up.

What are their goals?

What do they want to achieve?
