I’m a Software Developer, and although I’ve long subscribed to the mantra — “We can code anything” — I read all the news about layoffs, downsizing, and the near impossible demand for what Software Developers attempt to keep up with.
I can code in a number of different languages and platforms, and know how different cloud architectures work, but I don’t know it all. I can recall when it felt like software development was exploding into all these frameworks and variants, and that the only way to improve was to focus on a few to get very good at them.
But that game has changed, and over the past few months, I have used AI for a combination of searching and code help (I haven’t been to StackOverflow for a while).
So the question becomes, if AI is after my lunch, preparing it, while I am thinking about it, and eating it before I have a chance to make it — where does the developer’s value exist?
There are skills that are on the decline, that shouldn’t be discounted simply because we think AI can do them better, they are scarce, and they are yours for the taking.
