What you Bring to your Team

Many years ago, I remember a team member rushing to get me to jump in on a final interview with a great resource that would be incredible to our team.

They had passed everything, they were the future of our team.

They had some strong senior technical skills that were looking to harness in our group that would help with mentorship and coaching.

But when I talked to them…

  • They didn’t want to code.
  • They didn’t want to fix bugs.
  • They didn’t want to lead a team.
  • They didn’t want to mentor junior developers.
  • And the attitude of superiority was turning me off.

The conversations went on for another 10 minutes, I had a complete list of all that they didn’t want to do whilst staring at the job description that said everything we needed.

I was confused and must have missed something, my entire team was sold on this person.

When everyone was back in the room I asked the only question I could think of in that moment …

What do they Bring to the Team?

We sat there for a bit, staring at each other, and then came to the conclusion.

  1. Yes had experience.
