You have your Performance Review.
You give each person on your team their own Performance Review.
But when was the last time you and your team gave your team a performance review?
When I was leading software teams, I would take a moment each quarter and end of the year and think about how we were doing as a team, asking myself the same questions that I was asking of each member and myself.
The Big 5 Questions
How are we doing?
What do we do well?
What do we need to work on?
Where do we see ourselves going next year?
What do we need to be successful?
But I did this solo, I did this without my team, and that was probably a big mistake, because, through it all, I was always looking through that one singular lens of what I thought we needed to do.
In teams I work with now, I encourage them to perform this exercise, together, with the leader being more of a notetaker to get the conversation started and focus on the writing down of what comes from the team.
